WOMEN OF COLOR SYMPOSIUM
March 5-6, 2010
CUB Jr. Ballroom
In commemoration of Women's History Month, the National Institute for Women of Color has designated the first day of March as NATIONAL WOMEN OF COLOR DAY. The Coalition for Women Students (CWS) hosts the annual Women of Color Symposium program at Washington State University. The program includes speakers and workshops, a luncheon and award presentation, and other special events. The symposium has included CWS alumni returning to campus to share with us their experiences and insights on their journeys as student activists and leaders, as well as
woman mentors.
Through the use of the phrase, "Women of Color," we take a stand against prejudice and affirmatively demonstrate an awareness of the connection among Asian and Pacific Islanders, African American, Chicana/Latinas, and Native American communities of women. As "women of color" we have the potential to bring success to our respective communities by imparting our cultural values, “herstories”, and knowledge that our existence and experience as women is just as important as our membership in our racial/ethnic groups. In partnership with one another and our Caucasian sisters, we are a formidable and powerful voice for women within our campus community and the larger community as well. The CWS Women of Color Symposium is designed to recognize the achievement and contribution made by women of color and to acknowledge the support we receive from our allies.
